ACT format and scoring questions
How long is the ACT?
Adding ACT's published section times, the three required sections take 125 minutes (2 hours 5 minutes) of testing time before breaks: English 35, math 50, and reading 40 minutes. Optional science adds 40 minutes and optional writing adds 40 minutes.
How is the ACT Composite score calculated?
According to ACT, the Composite score is the average of your English, math, and reading scores, rounded to the nearest whole number. Science and writing are optional and do not affect it. Students who take science also receive a STEM score, the average of math and science.
Is there a penalty for guessing on the ACT?
No. According to ACT, there is no penalty for incorrect answers, so answer every question. Rule out the choices you can, pick from what is left, and move on.
What are ACT reporting categories?
They are the skill groups ACT uses on the score report. Each section lists its categories with the number of questions in each, the number you answered correctly, and your percent correct, which shows where to focus practice. Each page in this hub covers one category.
Are these real ACT questions?
No. Every question on these pages is original Dolphin practice written to match an ACT reporting category. For released questions in the real test format, use ACT's free official practice tests.
