Free SAT prep comparison

Dolphin SAT vs Khan Academy

Khan Academy offers free SAT courses with mastery-based practice, not just lessons. Dolphin SAT adds a separate daily-practice and missed-question review workflow. Use official Bluebook tests to rehearse the digital exam, whichever study resource you choose.

Quick answer

Is it worth paying for SAT prep when Khan Academy is free?

Not automatically. Start with Khan Academy if free lessons and skill practice meet your needs. Consider Dolphin only when its practice and review workflow solves a specific problem in your routine. A subscription is not required to prepare for the SAT, and neither option guarantees a score increase.

How to decide

Step 1

Can Khan Academy help you find weak SAT skills?

Yes. Khan Academy is more than a lesson library. Its Reading and Writing unit tests combine skills so you can spot topics that need more work. Use that feedback to choose a lesson or exercise, then check whether you can solve a new question without the explanation. A mastery indicator is study feedback, not an official SAT score.

Step 2

How do Bluebook results connect to Khan Academy?

Take official full-length tests in Bluebook and review scores and answers in My Practice. My Practice offers tailored questions and links to Khan Academy resources. These links are not automatic score imports: Khan Academy no longer supports College Board account linking or importing old SAT scores. Keep the test result and your course practice distinct when judging progress.

Step 3

When does adding Dolphin make sense?

Consider Dolphin if you want to answer daily questions and return to your missed Dolphin questions in one workflow. Before paying for any prep tool, name the gap you want it to solve: starting practice consistently, revisiting errors, or organizing test review. If your current free routine already does that, another subscription may add little. More resources are not the same as more useful practice.

Step 4

How can you use both without duplicating your study time?

Choose one weak skill from your recent work. Review its explanation, try fresh questions, and write down why an error happened. Use Khan Academy for the lesson or exercise and, optionally, Dolphin for a separate practice session. Later, revisit that skill without notes. Keep a short error log across tools rather than assuming that progress or scores sync between them.

FAQ

Do I need Dolphin to get targeted SAT practice?

No. Khan Academy has mastery-based skill practice, and College Board provides tailored practice in My Practice. Dolphin is an optional separate practice and missed-question review tool, not a requirement for targeted preparation.

Is Dolphin SAT free like Khan Academy?

Dolphin SAT has a free iOS companion app. Dolphin Web adds paid full practice tests, score tracking, and deeper review tools.

Does Khan Academy include full-length digital SAT tests?

No. Use Bluebook for official full-length digital practice tests, then My Practice for scores and answer review. Khan Academy supplies free lessons and skill practice between tests.
