Digital PSAT practice guide

PSAT Practice Questions and Study Plan

Free official PSAT practice tests are available in College Board's Bluebook app. Choose a full-length test for a scored baseline, review it in My Practice, then work on the skills you missed. Use paper practice for additional review or paper-based accommodations, not as an adaptive digital simulation.

Which free official PSAT resource should you use?

A full-length Bluebook test for your baseline

Use the official digital practice tests for a timed, scored rehearsal. Select the assessment you are preparing for; a PSAT 8/9 practice test is not a PSAT/NMSQT test. Sign in with your College Board student account so you can review the result afterward.

A test preview for learning the tools

The Bluebook test preview lets you try the digital tools before a full test. It is untimed and gives neither scores nor answer feedback. Completing it is not a scored practice baseline.

Paper tests and a question bank for targeted review

College Board's paper tests are nonadaptive and are recommended for students using paper-based accommodations. For smaller sets, the Student Question Bank lets you select a test, section, domain, skill, and difficulty. Neither a worksheet nor a handpicked set reproduces a full adaptive test.

Quick answer

How do you use a Bluebook PSAT practice test?

  1. Open Practice and Prepare in Bluebook and select a full-length test for your PSAT assessment, not just the test preview.
  2. Set aside uninterrupted time and follow the timer. Bluebook practice lets you advance sections early; staying until time expires gives you a more realistic pacing rehearsal.
  3. Open My Practice for scores and question review. Redo missed and guessed questions before reading the explanation.
  4. Record the skill, your mistaken step, and the cue you will check next time. Separate a knowledge gap from a sign error, misread question, or time-pressure mistake.
  5. Practice the weakest skills in short sets, then try unfamiliar questions. Take another full-length test after a study cycle; memorizing answers to the same test is not evidence of transfer.

Reading and Writing

54 questions in 64 minutes

Two 32-minute modules test information and ideas, craft and structure, expression of ideas, and Standard English conventions.Practice Reading and Writing skills

Math

44 questions in 70 minutes

Two 35-minute modules test algebra, advanced math, problem-solving and data analysis, and geometry and trigonometry. The 134 minutes of testing exclude the 10-minute break between sections.Practice Math skills

Adaptive testing

Two modules per section

Your performance in the first module helps determine the difficulty mix in the second, so accuracy and pacing both matter from the start.Review the official structure

How can you turn one missed algebra question into useful practice?

This Dolphin SAT question practices a shared algebra skill; it is not an official PSAT item or a prediction of PSAT difficulty. Try it first, then use the explanation to diagnose the step you missed.

The solution to the given system of equations is . What is the value of ?
  1. 10
  2. 15
  3. 20
  4. 25
Show answer and review steps

Answer: C. 20

  1. Add the equations side by side. The left sides cancel: . The right sides add to .
  2. Solve the resulting relation: , so . The question asks for 30x, which is twice 15x. Multiply both sides by 2: , choice C.
  3. Check the result if needed: gives in the first equation. In the second, both and equal . Both equations hold, but finding y was not needed to answer the question.

Choice A, 10, is the value of 15x, not 30x. Read the requested expression before selecting an answer. When adding equations, keep the signs on both constants: .

Review note: if you chose 10, the algebra may be correct but you stopped at the wrong expression. Write down what the question asks for before choosing an answer. If the signs caused trouble, practice adding signed terms before another timed set.

Dolphin question bank #1027; worked explanation reviewed October 8, 2026. Continue with systems of equations practice. One solved example does not measure readiness across a whole section.

Four-week PSAT study plan

How can you organize four weeks of PSAT prep?

Week 1

Diagnose

Take one full-length Bluebook PSAT test. Review missed and uncertain answers, then choose two recurring skill gaps. Keep an error log with the mistake and the next action, not just a score.

Week 2

Repair

Use short study sessions to revisit those skills and explain each solution without looking at the answer. Return to a missed question after a delay, then try a new one testing the same idea.

Week 3

Mix

Combine unfamiliar questions from several skills. Track whether the problem is choosing a method, executing it, or pacing. Review errors before increasing the number of timed questions.

Week 4

Retest

Take another available full-length test under comparable conditions. Compare repeated error types and pacing as well as scores. Use the final sessions for unresolved gaps and device preparation, not a promised point gain.

Use Bluebook for full-length PSAT practice tests

Bluebook provides the official adaptive testing experience, realistic timing, scores, and question review. Take at least one full-length test there before test day.

Use Dolphin for focused daily practice

Practice the Math and Reading and Writing skills behind your missed questions, review explanations, and keep your study plan moving between full-length tests. When you receive a score report, use our PSAT-to-SAT score guide to understand the shared scale and plan your next step.

PSAT practice FAQ

Common PSAT preparation questions

What is the best way to practice for the PSAT?

Start with an official full-length PSAT practice test in Bluebook, review every missed or uncertain question by skill, and then use targeted practice before taking another full-length test. Dolphin SAT supports the Math and Reading and Writing skills students need for the digital PSAT.

Is SAT practice useful for the PSAT?

Yes. The digital SAT and PSAT/NMSQT assess closely related Math and Reading and Writing skills. Students should still take an official PSAT practice test because the PSAT uses its own score scale and practice-test experience.

How long is the digital PSAT/NMSQT?

The PSAT/NMSQT has 2 hours and 14 minutes of testing, plus a 10-minute break between sections. It has 54 Reading and Writing questions in 64 minutes and 44 Math questions in 70 minutes, for 98 questions total.

Where can I take a free official PSAT practice test?

College Board offers free full-length PSAT practice tests in Bluebook. Sign in with a College Board student account, open Practice and Prepare, and select the appropriate PSAT assessment. Review your score and answers afterward in My Practice.

Is a Bluebook test preview the same as a practice test?

No. A test preview is an untimed introduction to the questions and tools, without a score or answer feedback. Choose a full-length practice test when you want a scored baseline for your study plan.

Should I use a PDF or Bluebook for PSAT practice?

Use Bluebook to rehearse digital testing. College Board also offers nonadaptive paper practice tests, especially for students testing with paper-based accommodations. A PDF can support question review, but it does not reproduce the adaptive digital experience.

Does Dolphin SAT help students prepare for the PSAT?

Yes. Dolphin SAT teaches and practices the Math and Reading and Writing skills students need for the PSAT, then helps students review weak areas and build a consistent study routine.
