What this tests

What to know for this SAT skill

How do you set up a unit conversion?

Write the starting quantity with its unit, then multiply by a ratio of equal quantities so the starting unit cancels. The measurement stays the same; its numerical value changes because you are counting different-sized units.

How do you choose which way the factor goes?

Put the unwanted unit on the opposite side of the fraction from where it starts. Cancel matching units before calculating. If the units do not reduce to the requested unit, reverse the factor or add another conversion step. Do not choose multiplication or division just because the conversion number looks familiar.

What changes when the quantity is a rate?

A rate has units in both its numerator and denominator. Keep both visible throughout the calculation. A time unit already in the denominator needs the matching unit in the numerator of the conversion factor. Convert only the units the question asks you to change, then check the final distance-per-time or quantity-per-time unit.

How can you check whether your answer makes sense?

For a positive length, area or volume, smaller units mean a larger numerical count of the same quantity. Rates need a separate check because changing a denominator unit can reverse that pattern. Convert your result back to the original units and compare it with the starting quantity. Keep intermediate values exact and round only as requested at the end.

Question 1 of 3Easy
If 1 hour = 60 minutes, how many minutes are in 3.5 hours?
  1. 35
  2. 120
  3. 180
  4. 210
Show answer and solution
Correct answerD. 210

Solution walkthrough

  1. Multiply 3.5 by 60 to get 210 minutes.
Question 2 of 3Medium
A car travels 180 miles in 3 hours. What is its average speed in miles per hour?
  1. 30
  2. 45
  3. 60
  4. 90
Show answer and solution
Correct answerC. 60

Solution walkthrough

  1. Speed is distance divided by time: 180 miles / 3 hours = 60 miles per hour.
Question 3 of 3Hard
A recipe uses 2 cups of flour for 8 servings. How many cups are needed for 20 servings?
  1. 4
  2. 5
  3. 8
  4. 10
Show answer and solution
Correct answerB. 5

Solution walkthrough

  1. The rate is 2 cups per 8 servings, or 1 cup per 4 servings.
  2. For 20 servings, 20 / 4 = 5 cups.

Avoid these traps

Common mistakes on this skill

Turning the conversion factor upside down

Arrange the factor so the unwanted unit cancels and the desired unit remains.

Converting only part of a compound unit

Rates such as miles per hour contain numerator and denominator units that may both need conversion.

FAQ

Questions about SAT Unit Conversions Practice

Why does dimensional analysis work?

Each conversion factor equals 1 because its numerator and denominator represent the same quantity in different units.

How do squared units convert?

Square the entire length conversion factor; for example, one square foot equals 144 square inches.
