What this tests

What to know for this SAT skill

How do you solve vocabulary-in-context questions?

Use a specific clue in the passage to predict the missing meaning, then test the choices against that clue. These worked examples show how to distinguish a precise fit from a word that is merely related to the topic.

How does a later clue define the missing word?

Researchers have struggled to pinpoint specific causes for hiccups, which happen when a person’s diaphragm contracts blank. However, neuroscientist Kimberley Whitehead has found that these uncontrollable contractions may play an important role in helping infants regulate their breathing.

Which choice completes the text with the most logical and precise word or phrase?

  1. involuntarily
  2. beneficially
  3. strenuously
  4. smoothly

Answer: A. involuntarily

  1. Find the phrase "uncontrollable contractions" in the second sentence. It describes the same diaphragm contractions as the first sentence, so predict "without conscious control" before checking the choices.
  2. Choose A, "involuntarily." It expresses lack of voluntary control. Read the sentence again with that word: the later description confirms the meaning.

Common trap

Do not choose "beneficially" merely because the passage later mentions a possible benefit for infants. The blank describes how the contractions occur. "Strenuously" describes effort and "smoothly" describes evenness; neither is supported by the clue "uncontrollable."

How does a reason support a character description?

For painter Jacob Lawrence, being blank was an important part of the artistic process. Because he paid close attention to all the details of his Harlem neighborhood, Lawrence’s artwork captured nuances in the beauty and vitality of the Black experience during the Harlem Renaissance and the Great Migration.

Which choice completes the text with the most logical and precise word or phrase?

  1. skeptical
  2. observant
  3. critical
  4. confident

Answer: B. observant

  1. The sentence beginning "Because" explains the missing description: Lawrence paid close attention to details. Predict "attentive to his surroundings."
  2. Choose B, "observant," meaning watchful or perceptive. That quality explains why his artwork captured subtle details of the experience described in the passage.

Common trap

A word can describe an artist in general without fitting this passage. "Skeptical" adds doubt, "critical" suggests judgment or finding fault, and "confident" adds self-assurance. The text supports careful observation, not those attitudes.

How does "because" distinguish a fitting choice from a random one?

Osage Nation citizen Randy Tinker-Smith produced and directed the ballet Wahzhazhe, which vividly chronicles Osage history and culture. Telling Osage stories through ballet is blank choice because two of the foremost ballet dancers of the twentieth century were Osage: sisters Maria and Marjorie Tallchief.

Which choice completes the text with the most logical and precise word or phrase?

  1. a suitable
  2. a determined
  3. an arbitrary
  4. an unpredictable

Answer: A. a suitable

  1. Read the reason after "because": two leading ballet dancers were Osage. That connection explains why ballet fits a work about Osage history and culture.
  2. Choose A, "a suitable." Substituting "an appropriate" preserves the relationship between the choice of ballet and the reason given.

Common trap

"An arbitrary" choice would lack a reason, but this passage supplies one. "A determined" emphasizes resolve, and "an unpredictable" emphasizes surprise; neither is established by the stated connection. Judge the choice in this text, not a general opinion about ballet.
