How do you find a parameter that makes a system have no solution?

In the given system of equations, is a constant. If the system has no solution, what is the value of ?
  1. 0
  2. 12
  3. -28
  4. 48
Answer and explanation

Answer: C

  1. Collect like terms in the first equation: . Divide every term by 4 to obtain . In the second equation, add 12x to both sides: .
  2. The x-coefficients now match. Set so the y-coefficients also match. Both left sides become , but their right sides are 6 and .
  3. The same expression cannot equal two different constants at once. The lines are parallel and distinct, so there is no solution. Choose C, . If the constants had also matched, the equations would describe the same line instead.

Do not compare the original y-coefficient, -64, before moving the other 48y term. Also, matching coefficient ratios alone does not prove there is no solution: check the constants to distinguish parallel lines from the same line.

Can you find the requested expression without solving for both variables?

The solution to the given system of equations is . What is the value of ?
  1. 10
  2. 15
  3. 20
  4. 25
Answer and explanation

Answer: C

  1. Add the equations side by side. The left sides cancel: . The right sides add to .
  2. Solve the resulting relation: , so . The question asks for 30x, which is twice 15x. Multiply both sides by 2: , choice C.
  3. Check the result if needed: gives in the first equation. In the second, both and equal . Both equations hold, but finding y was not needed to answer the question.

Choice A, 10, is the value of 15x, not 30x. Read the requested expression before selecting an answer. When adding equations, keep the signs on both constants: .

How do you simplify a quotient with different root indices?

If for all positive values of x, what is the value of ?
Answer and explanation

Answer: A

  1. Express both radicals as powers of x: and . Keep the square-root and cube-root indices distinct.
  2. Use the quotient rule for the same nonzero base: . Dividing the powers means subtracting their exponents, not dividing the exponents.
  3. Use a common denominator: . Thus , choice A. This algebra establishes the identity throughout the stated positive-x domain.

Do not subtract numerators and denominators separately. Also, adding these exponents would give , not : addition applies to a product of like bases, not this quotient.

Why is a possessive noun not always the subject?

In 2016, engineer Vanessa Galvez oversaw the installation of 164 bioswales, vegetated channels designed to absorb and divert stormwater, along the streets of Queens, New York. By reducing the runoff flowing into city sewers,

Which choice completes the text so that it conforms to the conventions of Standard English?
  1. the mitigation of both street flooding and the resulting pollution of nearby waterways has been achieved by bioswales.
  2. the bioswales have mitigated both street flooding and the resulting pollution of nearby waterways.
  3. the bioswales’ mitigation of both street flooding and the resulting pollution of nearby waterways has been achieved.
  4. both street flooding and the resulting pollution of nearby waterways have been mitigated by bioswales.
Answer and explanation

Answer: B

  1. Ask what reduces the runoff. The first sentence defines bioswales as channels that absorb and divert stormwater, so "By reducing the runoff" should describe the bioswales.
  2. Look for the head of the subject phrase, not just a matching word. A and C make "mitigation" the head. In C, "bioswales’" is only a possessive modifier of "mitigation. " D makes flooding and pollution the subject.
  3. Choose B: "the bioswales" is the subject of "have mitigated" and the logical agent of reducing runoff. The introductory phrase now explains how those channels produced the stated result.

A choice can begin with a relevant word and still attach the modifier incorrectly. Read the entire subject phrase: "the bioswales" names the channels, while "the bioswales’ mitigation" names their effect.

How do dates and surrounding verbs establish the tense?

From 1912 to 1951, Charlotta Bass owned and operated the newspaper The California Eagle. While it was under Bass’s leadership, The Eagle one of the US’s most influential Black-owned newspapers.

Which choice completes the text so that it conforms to the conventions of Standard English?
  1. will become
  2. became
  3. is becoming
  4. to become
Answer and explanation

Answer: B

  1. Mark "From 1912 to 1951," "owned and operated," and "was. " Together, these clues place the newspaper's development during a completed period in the past.
  2. Choose B, "became. " This finite simple-past verb completes the main clause about The Eagle and agrees with the passage's past-time frame.

A verb need not copy the exact spelling of nearby verbs: "became" is an irregular past form. "Will become" shifts to the future, and "is becoming" shifts to the present. "To become" is an infinitive, so it cannot by itself supply the required main-clause verb.

How does a reason support a character description?

For painter Jacob Lawrence, being was an important part of the artistic process. Because he paid close attention to all the details of his Harlem neighborhood, Lawrence’s artwork captured nuances in the beauty and vitality of the Black experience during the Harlem Renaissance and the Great Migration.

Which choice completes the text with the most logical and precise word or phrase?
  1. skeptical
  2. observant
  3. critical
  4. confident
Answer and explanation

Answer: B

  1. The sentence beginning "Because" explains the missing description: Lawrence paid close attention to details. Predict "attentive to his surroundings. "
  2. Choose B, "observant," meaning watchful or perceptive. That quality explains why his artwork captured subtle details of the experience described in the passage.

A word can describe an artist in general without fitting this passage. "Skeptical" adds doubt, "critical" suggests judgment or finding fault, and "confident" adds self-assurance. The text supports careful observation, not those attitudes.

How to use free SAT practice questions

Step 1

Which free SAT questions should I start with?

Use a full-length Bluebook test for a scored baseline. If you already know the weak skill, choose a short set from the skill links here or College Board's Student Question Bank. A small filtered set helps diagnose one skill; it cannot estimate your full SAT score.

Step 2

How should I review a missed SAT question?

Review every missed and uncertain question, not only the wrong answers. Name the tested skill, explain why your choice failed, identify the evidence or calculation that proves the correct answer, and then solve a new question that uses the same skill.

Step 3

How should I use a short set of worked examples?

Try each question before opening its explanation. Write down the calculation or passage evidence that supports your answer, then compare your reasoning with the worked solution. A handful of examples can introduce skills and reveal mistakes, but it is not a representative SAT diagnostic or a score prediction. Use official full-length practice to rehearse timing and measure your baseline.

Step 4

When should I take another full-length practice test?

Return to a full-length test after you have practiced the weak skills from your last test. Use the next result to check whether those skills improved and to choose the next review cycle instead of taking tests without studying the mistakes between them.

FAQ

Does Dolphin SAT have free SAT practice questions?

Yes. The public skill pages linked here offer questions and explanations without a subscription, and students can start with free practice in the Dolphin SAT iOS app. Dolphin Web has separate access terms; free practice does not mean every web feature is free.

Are Dolphin SAT questions official College Board questions?

Dolphin SAT is an independent preparation product; a question's presence on Dolphin does not by itself establish who authored it. For official SAT questions published directly by College Board, use its Bluebook practice tests or Student Question Bank.

Are free SAT questions enough?

A question bank is most useful when it is part of a complete loop: take an official baseline test, review missed and uncertain questions, practice the weak skills, and then take another full-length test to measure progress.

Where can I find official SAT practice questions?

College Board provides official full-length digital practice tests in Bluebook and thousands of official questions in its Student Question Bank.
